The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games is the first volume of a trilogy of young-adult novels written by Suzanne Collins. Catching Fire and MockingJay are its sequels, the latter of which is yet to be published.

The books are set in a post-apocalyptic world, in the territories of what once were the United States, which is now divided into 12 districts, ruled by the authoritarian government of The Capitol. Every year The Capitol celebrates the Hunger Games, a televised competition in which two adolescents from each district are forced to participate in a cruel game of survival. Katniss Everdeen is the protagonist, a sixteen year old girl who volunteers to enter the games in place of her little sister, and is involved in a revolutionary movement.

The books have enjoyed great reviews from critics, staying on The New York Times Best Seller list for 92 weeks. It comes as no surprise, then , that they will be taken into the big screen next year. The script will be written by Collins herself, which makes perfect sense since she has worked for years writing TV shows for children, such as Clarissa Explains it All  (which I’m sure you must have seen on Nickelodeon).

If you have some spare time this holidays, I really recommend you read these books; they are easy reading, fast paced novels full of action, some horror and a little bit of romance.
